In pyrolysis processes, the H/C ratio of coal is raised by rejecting carbon. The liquid products have little value, but pyrolysis is used on a massive scale to turn coal into coke for metallurgy, especially steelmaking. The coking process involves heating coal in closed vessels to very high temperatures (up to 2,000°C) in the absence of oxygen.
